2011StirlingdeneWebQualified at BSPS Wales

Yellow Dun Highland Stallion, 9yrs old by FYFEDENE out of DARK MAIDEN OF KILDAVIE.

This pony was bred by Scott McGregor before his departure to Australia. He came to us as a three year old and was broken as a 4 year old by Frazer. As a five year old he qualified for the Picton Novice Championship where he won his class and went Reserve Champion at the final. His first year under saddle culminated with a qualification and first trip to Olympia. As a six year old he qualified for HOYS, and OLYMPIA. Not knowing what to expect from him at his first HOYS, we were totally thrilled for him to win his Highland/Fells and Dales class, and then go on to be Reserve Champion. Numerous wins as a seven year old and a return trip to HOYS. As an eight year old, he had very few outings. His first outing of the season saw him win at Hereford Marches and qualify for the RIHS, his next show was the PUK West Mids at Malvern where he qualified for HOYS. He then went to NPS Area 14 in Essex and qualified for OLYMPIA. His next outing was at Midlands County and saw him win In Hand and qualify for the CUDDY. The only pony to qualify for all four and in his first four shows of the season. Our showing year ended with a fantastic RESERVE PONY CHAMPION in the CUDDY – a result beyond our wildest dreams and the highest placing ever achieved by a Highland. This year his shows have again been limited, due to Stirling standing at stud and Frazer’s work commitments, however he has won three P(UK) National Championships: “Keston” In Hand Champion, “Glyn Greenwood” In Hand Champion and “Kingsford” Ridden Champion. He has won two HOYS qualifiers this year, Cheshire County where he stood Reserve and Great Yorkshire where he stood Champion. A trip to Wales in September saw him qualify for Olympia for the fourth time. He is truly a pony of a lifetime!

Blackertor Rhonda

2011BlackertorRhondaWebBlackertor Rhonda, bay Shetland mare owned by Lynda Buchanan Jackson, bred by David Hodge of the Blackertor Stud and always ridden by Elizabeth Evans.

Wilma spent her early years as a brood mare and had a successful career in hand, winning many championships at breed and county shows.

She commenced her ridden career somewhat late in life but has certainly made up for lost time over the past 2 years.  2010 started with a win at PUK South and her first HOYS Open ticket. This was swiftly followed by 1st place and the  M & M Championship at Royal Windsor and a coverted  place at Olympia. 2 shows – 2 tickets so back in the field until the NPS Summer Champs where Wilma won the DES section of the Ringside Stud M & M Open ridden championship Final and was Reserve Champion in the prestigious NFU Mutual Supreme Final.

2011 was always going to be quiet due to Elizabeth’s GCSE commitments and again Wilma has only been very lightly shown but has won at 4 of the 5 shows attended. She was 1st and Res Champion NPS Ringside Stud Open Ridden at NPS area 7 and repeated this result at NPS Area 25.  A brief trip to Malvern for the last day only of the NPS Summer Champs saw Wilma qualify for HOYS Open for the second year running. She has been fortunate to be in the top placings at HOYS in both 2010 and 2011 and was top Shetland in 2011.

A very last minute decision to travel to the Heritage Champs proved worthwhile as Wilma qualified for Olympia 2011 by winning the breed class.

Bring on the new format Final at Christmas. We are ready!

Cwmmaddoc Neifion

2011CwmmaddocNeifionWebOwned & bred by Shirley Williams
Produced by Nicki Oldershaw, Larnleigh Stud
Ridden by Amy Simcox & Nicki Oldershaw

Cwmmaddoc Neifion is a 16 year old Section C Stallion owned and bred by Mrs Shirley Williams of Pencader. Neifion was carefully brought on as a ridden youngster and lightly shown as a 5 year old culminating in a win at the Royal of England and also a 2nd place at the Royal Welsh a couple of weeks later. Neifion then returned to stud duties but was brought out under saddle again in 2003/4 when he won many many first prizes and championships he was also ridden Intermediate reserve supreme champion at the 2004 NPS Championships. Neifion again returned to the field to enjoy time with his ladies, and there he remained for the last 7 years until a chance meeting at the 2010 WPCS AGM. Myself and my husband Dan were becoming increasingly frustrated at last year's AGM dinner as we were struggling to find somewhere to be seated even though it was an unplanned seating arrangement. I then spotted a small table in the corner and made a beeline for it as by this time we just wanted to get seated to be able to enjoy the rest of the evening. You could have knocked us down with a feather when who should be sat at this table but Shirley and Edmund Williams, old friends that we hadn't seen since Neppie was out showing as a 5 year old, what a chance meeting this was as only two weeks before a mutual friend had asked if we had seen anything of Shirley and Edmund and we replied that we hadn't seen them for years! We had a great evening of good company, I made a promise that night that if Shirley and Edmund had any ponies that they would like showing to drop me a line. Sure enough Monday morning we received a letter and photos of two ponies, and a couple of weeks later we visited Pencader with the plan to return with one Section A and a Black Section C mare. As we arrived we saw Neifion in the field and couldn't help but admire him.

Unfortunately the mare we were meant to take back wouldn't load and as she was heavily in foal we didn't want to upset her so decided to leave her to foal at home, at this moment Neifion wandered over to the gate for a nosey, Shirley pointed to him and said do you want to take him instead?? Quick as a flash we whipped him out the field and onto the lorry before Shirley could change her mind. Neifion truly is the pony that makes dreams come true, as after a very successful 2010 season including winning his WPCS bronze medal we decided to bring him out under saddle. He again won many first prizes and championships under saddle, and we decided along with our friends Bev and Amy Simcox to try him in the last HOYS qualifier of 2010, imagine our surprise and Elation when he took the ticket at his one and only attempt! Neifion and Amy were then a very credible 8th place amongst some fantastic company at HOYS 2010. Neifion then enjoyed a few day hunting over the winter to come back to a very busy and successful season in 2011. This season started very well with a Supreme Championship at Home Counties WPCA, and then a reserve Supreme at North Western Welsh. Neifion again won his bronze medal In hand, and 3 performance medals, amongst numerous other wins and championships both in hand and ridden. Amy and Neifion also qualified for RIHS in 2011 but sadly due to work commitments we were unable to get him to Essex. BSPS Heritage Champs was due to be Neifion 's final show as his extended holiday at Larnleigh Stud was to come to an end and he was to return back to Shirley in Wales the weekend of the cob sales. Neifion had other ideas and surpassed all our expectations to win the Section C qualifier on the Sunday and therefore booking his place at Olympia 2011.

Neifion truly is a pony of a lifetime a pony that makes dreams come true! In only two seasons he has qualified for RIHS, HOYS and now Olympia, whilst combining this with stud duties, hunting and in hand showing, Proving the Welsh Pony of cob type to be an adaptable all rounder!

Our sincerest thanks must go to Shirley Williams for entrusting us with her fabulous boy and also to Amy Simcox who has given Neifion some fabulous rides to qualify for all the major championships.

Galloon Rollover

2011GalloonRolloverWeb"Barney" as he is known at home was purchased from his breeder James Naan from Ireland in September 2006 as a 2 year old. He had a very successful in hand year as a 3 year old and proved a very easy pony to break, taking to being ridden like an old hand. After a very lightly campaigned but successful 4 year old season Barney was turned away ready for a full season as a 5 year old BUT...his me, his mother had different plans! A skiing accident in March put paid to that and his season didn't start until August but ended with a very successful BSPS Heritage Champs with wins as a Novice, Restricted and Open. So 2010 would hopefully be our year, things going very smoothly, Champion at BSPS Winter Champs, qualified Royal International, 2x  2nds in HOYS qualifiers followed by a win at our 3rd attempt..fab!! BUT oh no, I was to break my arm the beginning of July and missed both the Royal International and HOYS!

2011 though has definatley been "OUR" year and one worth waiting for, qualifying for every major show first time out and the highlight most definatley has to be winning the Royal International for the first time on my "once in a lifetime" pony, Barney Rubble!!

Pumphill Bennet

2011PumphillBennetWebPumphill Bennet is a ten year old dartmoor stallion whos sire is Wilby Victory and dam is Pumphill Belladonna (who has qualified twice for Olympia.  She was best of breed one year and then 7th the following year and she also won supreme in Hand at the Horse of the Year show.)  Bennet won the Mountain and Moorland small Breeds at HOYS in 2009 and was 2nd at the RIHS the same year.  This year he was 3rd at HOYS.

We were so pleased to qualify for Olympia at the Heritage Champs. We competed at Olympia in 2006 with our section A Waxwing Paintbox and thought the show to be a great prestigious event. We have entered Olympia Qualifiers for the pas two years and nearly always won the small breeds section but getting the Championship place seemed near impossible.  We had two reserves and that was as close as we got!!  I thing the NPS did a good job regarding the Olympia qualifiers but the new system in place seemed a much fairer option and gave us a better chance to qualify without travelling up and down the country. We also thought it was a good idea to have two judges instead of just the one. The entries and quality at the finals at the Heritage Show was fantastic and the atmosphere was great.

Well done BSPS!!

Abergavenny Tywysog

2011AbergavennyTywysogWebIn his first season with us, and only second under saddle, Harry has qualified RIHS, HOYS & OLYMPIA.

When I first spotted Harry at Moreton-in –the –Marsh last season I knew he was the Section D I had spent years looking for.  It quickly followed by “Mum there is the owner, go and see if he’ll sell him”.  It wasn’t long before he had arrived at his new home.  It was only then we realised we had actually seen and tried to buy him years earlier when he was running with mares and foals we had been to look at, we knew then it was meant to be!

Harry took his first RIHS qualification at Hambleton with a win and champion.  Unfortunately he didn’t make the journey down to Hickstead as I decided to ride my fell stallion instead.  Harry didn’t take this decision lying down soon after winning Royal Norfolk to take his first HOYS qualification.  At his first visit to HOYS he took it all in his stride standing fourth in a very strong section.

Another win and champion at Bakewell County show gave Harry his Olympia Semi-Final ticket.  After a disappointing result at the semi final we decided to take our two boys to the final qualifier at Countryside Live.  In the beautiful great yorkshire main ring Harry strutted his stuff to take the biggest class of the day.  But after winning another section I had the agonising decision over which one to ride in the championship. I decided to ride my fell stallion.   After being told repeatedly I would be extremely silly not to take both in I decided to ask Sarah Parker if she would mind taking the ride on Harry as I knew she had ridden him before for his previous owner.  Harry once again proved his point, taking the championship and me and my fell standing reserve to him!

After such an amazing first season with this gorgeous boy I am thoroughly looking forward to rounding it off with our trip to Olympia together.

Rushfield Bailey

2011RushfieldBaileyWebBailey is 8yrs old, homebred Dartmoor, out of Haven Tia Maria by Springwater Happy Day he was shown very successfully in hand as a youngster before his ridden career took off. Partnered by Louise Maxwell they have appeared at HOYS three times,  the RI once and this will be his second time to Olympia whilst he is short on stature he is  big on character he greets his stablemates by putting his front feet in his trough which is about 2ft off the ground he can then get his head round far enough to nuzzle his next door neighbour who at present is a 6 month dartmoor colt. This year Bailey has been to a few shows only but he was champion at Ayr won his Hoys classes at Royal Highland and The Great Yorkshire and was 4th at Hoys and qualified at the Heritage Champs for Olympia.
